Steamed Ash Flooring mini site now up!:
We have rooted even deeper into the interior flooring market with our own new range of luxury steamed ash
floorings 'WATTSONS Steamed Ash Floorings'. The sister web site www.steamedash.co.uk is now up and
running with all the details and specifications.

18th February 2008:
About us:
Following the acquisition and redevelopment of unit 1, Cottingham Way, Thrapston, all the relevant departments have now been relocated and are fully operational.

With their own dedicated machinery in place, the tables and floors production levels have increased beyond
expectations, whilst still maintaining the exceptional quality required for any WATTSONS product.

Reception and accounts have also been relocated to the purpose built offices at the front of the unit.

This building represents an investment of £1,200,000 for WATTSONS Teak Products.

Future Teak Supplies:

Background:
To date Burma Teak has been the only Teak considered suitable for Marine Decking. This has been
due to its’ slow natural growth that provides the teak with a dense, oily texture and giving high durable and wear resistant properties required by the marine industry.

However the problem with Burma teak is

◆ Limited supply
◆ Falling quality
◆ Increasing prices
◆ Political and market sensitivity
◆ And now EU sanctions

For many years we have thought that these problems would manifest themselves and have been actively working to set up a secure supply of a suitable alternative to Burma teak. Most alternatives have been tried and failed. Plantation teaks from around the world tends to be too fast grown, too young at harvest, and lacking the density, oil content and cannot supply the timber grade required.

This is what we now have:

Teak from Equatoria

It is the first real alternative to Burma teak.

For the last 2-3 years we have been working actively with our suppliers to develop the sawn Teak from two sites in Western and Central Equatoria.

Teak from Equatoria meets all the perceived demands,

◆ Steady supply
◆ Control of the source
◆ Stable pricing
◆ High quality
◆ Even colour and characteristics
◆ 100% Suitable for Marine decking

The wood:
Teak from Equatoria is truly unique and is the first real alternative found to Burma teak, meeting, and in many ways surpassing, the look, characteristics and properties of Burma teak. The reason for its’ unique
characteristics are to do with soil, climatic conditions, altitude and silvi culture. Unique amongst alternative
supplies, both the nature of the teak and also the formation and grade of the log, does allow for decking
production, as we have seen from the samples that we have made into panels during our research and
development stage. These were cut using a temporary mill imported to sample the teak and to cut for
construction material pending main sawmill being installed.

Supply availability:
This first mill will be starting to saw in March/April with test shipments going out 2nd quarter 2008. Main production from mill 1 will be 3rd quarter 2008 with Mill 2 following about 3-6 months behind. Forecast sawn volumes for end 2008 and 2009 will be 20>30,000 m3 pa, increasing by 50% in 2010.

Initial production will concentrate on the high end of the market, with decking being the prime target specification.

Price level indications:
The prices will be on par with recent Burma Teak prices, but it is the intention to bring stability
into both supply and pricing in order to establish the brand and bring confidence back into the Teak market.

Production Company:
The sawmill companies are owned by UK and Finnish government development funds, and the management of the companies and operations is by a British owned company with long experience in this field and in the region, staffed mainly by European and South African professionals supported by a program of training key nationals. The sawmill will have experienced Teak saw millers from Asia controlling the cutting and grading to ensure a first rate product.

Supply to D A Watts:
WATTSONS Teak Products have sufficient Teak in the pipeline to comfortably last at least through 2008, and it is expected that Teak for WATTSONS should be shipped from Equatoria 2nd-3rd quarter ’08. From 3rd Quarter we will have available a source of Teak that will give you the customer, a deck both superior to Burma teak (due to the consistency of the material and lack of ‘tar’).
